Verlust refers to the loss of identity and the loss of one’s center, as written by the Austrian art historian Hans Sedlmayer. It can be seen as a metaphor for the primordial loss, as in our disconnection from Paradise.
Faranak Sohi presents the sound installation Not only the lives of others. She shows an outline of her home in Iran, which has been under constant surveillance. On the wires she has written the lines usually made use of during an interrogation. These words are to hear in the headphones.
Marianne Thingholm’s collage, Verlust der Mitte, consists of images of vegetation cut out from newspaper real-estate ads. The surrounding houses and skies are cut away. Detached from their usual context, the remaining pieces are strewn about as though taken by a centrifugal force, clumping them together in the periphery leaving the middle as an abstraction of empty whiteness. The white space in the middle of the collage represents both loss and emptiness as well as potentially uncreated space.
